A Vision Comes to Life

Construction began on Bengaluru's first public aquarium, designed by the Karnataka Department of Fisheries. With its unique octagonal architecture, the building was created to inspire curiosity about the fascinating world beneath the water's surface.

1983

Opening Our Doors

On 27 August 1983, the Government Aquarium officially welcomed its very first visitors. It quickly became India's second-largest aquarium, offering families, students, and tourists an exciting window into freshwater life.

1983–2017

Creating Memories

For more than three decades, the aquarium became a beloved Bengaluru landmark. Thousands of visitors explored colourful freshwater species, discovered aquatic ecosystems, and developed a deeper appreciation for life underwater through educational displays and interactive learning.

2018

A New Chapter

After decades of welcoming visitors, the aquarium began showing its age. Essential repairs and maintenance were undertaken to preserve the historic building while setting the stage for an exciting future transformation.

2019

Dreaming Bigger

A bold new vision was unveiled to transform the aquarium into a world-class destination for conservation, education, and immersive experiences. Plans included modern habitats, enhanced learning opportunities, and innovative ways for visitors to connect with aquatic life.

Building the Future Together

The Karnataka Department of Fisheries launched a Public–Private Partnership to bring this vision to life. The project aimed to blend the aquarium's rich heritage with cutting-edge technology, larger exhibits, and unforgettable visitor experiences.

2023

Transformation Begins

With Namma Bengaluru Aquarium Pvt. Ltd. leading the redevelopment, the aquarium was completely reimagined. New features, including Bengaluru's first walk-through tunnel aquarium, themed exhibits, a tranquil koi pond, digital guides, and interactive displays, began taking shape behind the scenes.

Grand Reopening

The newly transformed Namma Bengaluru Aquarium officially reopened its doors. Visitors could now journey through stunning freshwater and marine habitats, admire vibrant coral reef species, walk beneath swimming fish in the tunnel aquarium, and enjoy a truly immersive aquatic adventure.

2024–Now

The Journey Continues

Today, Namma Bengaluru Aquarium is home to over 100 aquatic species from around the world. From colourful reef fish and graceful jellyfish to interactive exhibits and conservation-focused experiences, the aquarium continues to inspire curiosity, learning, and a love for our underwater world, creating unforgettable memories for every visitor.
